- With “photo-light-painting” I “paint” with various light sources directly into a digital camera. I create layers and movement very much in the same way I do working with paint. The artistry comes in using multiple exposures and colors to shape the light and magic that resides in everyday settings--to bring out qualities otherwise invisible. It's not a Photoshop and/or computer-generated process--it's "hands on"--executed in real time. I’m finding this to be a very rich and compelling new process that I have not seen done anywhere else in quite the same way!

The beauty of Photo Light Paintings is that they are created as high density digital files--i.e. RAW files, or "digital negatives"--created right in the camera.
This means that the photo-paintings are scalable and can be printed in virtually any quantity, at sizes ranging from a postcard to a painting 100 feet across! This makes them a very attractive solution in many different types of spaces.
This scalability applies not just to quantity of reproduction, but also to the quality of the image. With Photo Light Paintings being essentially a form of Photography, every print is a photo-print original (as opposed to a photo-reproduction--as in the case of Giclee Paintings), providing collector value and longevity.
Photo Light Paintings are made to compliment, and bring beauty, luminosity, and vibrancy to virtually ANY space: a modern home/residence; a large commercial space such as a hotel or office suite; even a very large space such as a corporate mezzanine. With "PLP's" ... size matters, and the bigger the better!
They can be printed on substrates including canvas, archival paper, even metal. Depending on the piece and/or series, they are available in Open and/or Limited Editions.

Henry Rowland began painting in the late 60's. He studied fine art painting and photography at The Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. in 1970-71 and won First Prize in the Contemporary Abstract Painting category in 1971. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Colorado in 1978 where he continued studying fine art but also studied music, production and film-making. This sparked a career in the arts, which has lasted to this day.
Rowland’s paintings have found homes in private collections in Washington D.C., London, New York and Paris. His earlier works were mostly oil and acrylic on canvas. In the 90's, Rowland began experimenting with oils on harder surfaces, such as poster board and masonite. You can see a portion of this collection online at www.henryrowland.com
Rowland's Photo Paintings are printed onto photo paper, canvas and metal.
Rowland states, "As a painter, I have been primarily interested in Abstract Surrealist painting. I was profoundly inspired by Chilean master Roberto Matta, who’s paintings seemed to me like gateways to other dimensions in both the figurative and psychological sense. I became fascinated how working with paint textures and layers allows surreal images to emerge from the canvas—forms, shapes and faces seem to appear from the shadows, like images we sometimes see in clouds. Anyone familiar with Matta's works knows how intriguing, mysterious, and evocative those images are. For me, working with Abstract Surrealist painting is more about connecting with the imagination and the Unconscious than with the literal. I see “space and luminosity” as a metaphor for freedom, and “depth and shadow” as a metaphor of our quest to find it."
